To be honest you may as well ask how much is an Elephant .
You know it's going to be more than you would think ,but when you get an answer you think it should be cheaper.
The next one is usually 'How much is a Trained Gun Dog' ?
Again, you may as well ask how much is a Trained Elephant .!
African or Asian ? 1 year old or 10 year old ? Cow or Bull ? Oh and by the way ,'what do you expect it to actually do '?
From here on in it gets real complicated when you take in the context of 'How much does a Gun Dog Cost' .
Let's make it easy and start with a Puppy ?
Before we start we would have to narrow it down to specific breed as Retriever puppies cost between £500 -£1,500 ,so adding in other breed specific would just make it an accountancy nightmare from the very start and we haven't even got the dog yet ! Or arrived at any possible end figure.
Keeping it real simple ,we will stick with the more common Retriever with that vague band of £1,000 differential .
Start with the £500 puppy with the same health test/clearances as the £1,500 puppy as a guide to obtain this 'How much is a Gun Dog' figure .
Let's assume they both have relevantly the same number of 'Ftch' in their pedigrees to make it a fair playing field (and is usually the case in real life)
Normal is 8 weeks old that the puppy is in the hands of 'The purchaser' from the breeder, and from there in costs apply on top of the purchase price .
Registration and transfer ownership fees with Kennel Club along with Vet vaccinations and microchip change of registration fee,and food, for the next few weeks ,never mind any accessories you buy such as lead/collar/bedding /kennelling etc .This can also range from £100- £200 no matter which puppy we are talking about and the pup is only 10 weeks old by now ! So the cost for both so far is circa £700 and £1,700 respectively.
So now comes 'environment' by that ,it could be in the house or outside in kennels . Kennels range from minimum £500 - £10,000.Now even if You already have the kennels they were a cost and the pup is now part of that cost .In the House may require a Crate . Crates range in size and price from £30 -£100 .
So far this Gun Dog puppy is becoming an expensive asset and not on the accountancy books for many ? and not even retrieved one duck !
Usually after this conversation with the man/Woman on the street the numbers have went way over their head ! ...
Many just then Buy a Gun Dog breed such as a Retriever puppy and decide they don't want a 'Trained Gun Dog' .
But the cost is exactly the same ! When they take the same route Up to this point ..?
So let's carry on after this 10 week point with the owner who want's to go further .
Next comes ,'Training' . Well that has to take a differential from both these £500 and £1,500 pups also . Training a £500 pup for someone that already has the skills and the facilities already in place such as kennel/crate/experience /training aids/grounds and more importantly 'Time' is obviously going to achieve more than someone with the £1,500 pup who doesn't have these things in place ?, but it fit's the other way just the same to the pup .
Now we have a Huge differential ! ...The cost of training A Gun Dog !
Fee's paid by someone who can't or doesn't know how to train this Gun Dog has the same cost for a £500 pup or a £1,500 pup .
There is no fee for the breeder of a £1,500 pup to train his/her Gun Dog , only If they can without a Trainer or any Training fees.
Any one lost on the figures and the permutations yet ?
We haven't got to 'How long does it take' YET!
